My art club kids made some really neat collages today using cut-up maps, magazines, and origami paper. As always, I was so impressed by the creative ideas they come up with. For example, here is an image of animals on land ("a square island") and animals in the sea - the three-dimentional piece is the sky!

And this little one used a beautiful layered mosaic technique to represent the earth:

And here's a proud artist showing off his work (an underwater scene featuring a family of cut-out dolphins):

They're pretty much totally inspiring.

Sunday Brunch

We hosted a little potluck brunch this morning at our house. I made a pancetta and leek quiche and a broccoli dill quiche, and guests brought pastries, porridge, crepes, fruit, breads, and more.

Before folks arrived I took some more photos of the new tabletop. Here you can see all the dining room changes from the past few months - the new light, the new built-in bookshelves, and the new table.

I came upon this school-bus-turned-tiny-house and have been sitting here in amazement, just pondering it's loveliness, thinking about possibilities. The craftsmanship looks impeccable. And the wood stove, the tongue and groove ceilings, the windows... Just. Wow.

Do you use Pinterest? I just started using it this week and i'm obsessed. Which is ok, I decided, because it is actually a useful way to organize all of my other obsessions.

All those someday attic renovation photos - they go here now! And ideas for organizing the studio? Why, those live right here!

I can make a "pin board" for whatever I want and collect my inspiration in one place. And it's all visually organized so I can keep track of it. And that concludes my glowing advertisement . But you can go see all my virtual pin boards by clicking over here.

Have you seen our newly refinished butcher block table top? We got it for free because it was covered in hideous red linoleum affixed with tar - a really awful combination. When we discovered that there was hardwood butcher block underneath, Eli got to work scraping and sanding and when Michal Ann visited she jumped in and did tons of work on it.

It's beautiful and shiny and sturdy and the wood is a million different amazing colors. A favorite feature is the zig-zag sutures that someone put in long ago to fix a separation in the wood.

Here it is all ready for dinner:

the last week of december is crazytimes. so many places to travel, people to see, holidays to celebrate. it was a stressful whirlwind, to be certain.

there was christmas at dad's...

hanukkah at mom's...

dinner with Mary and Dean...

a trip up north where we saw frank's guitars-in-progress...

and perused some of Michal Ann's treasures with Sanya and Joe...

then it was back to Durham for my birthday dinner...

and reunion with Darby...

followed by a new years eve gathering at brian and anne's.

Tomorrow we're back to work. weren't we supposed to get some "vacation" in there or something?

i should have taken a "before" shot of the messy shelves, but alas, you'll have to trust me that it looked significantly different before we spent some serious quality time folding yesterday.

someday we will find a better solution for our clothes storage (the closet to the left is small and weirdly shallow, and the shelving is awkwardly spaced - although we do use that as well). we have talked about getting some wardrobes like these, or installing a fancy elfa system along that wall someday when we can afford it.

for now, we'll just try to stay on top of the folding...

Our dining room has gotten an update! This is the fixture that was there when we moved in:

It was fairly basic - not the most terrible fixture in the grand scheme of fixtures, but also just not my style. So when we were at Ikea and saw simple fixtures for 25-35 bucks, we went for it.

First we (er, Eli) had to take off the old fixture. Here is Eli investigating the old wiring...

When we finally took down the old fixture we were really surprised at how heavy it was. The new Ikea one is just a simple globe and is very lightweight:

I spent some quality time with the paper cutter making a stack of pre-cut "pages" for this project in After School. I showed the kids how to use pencil erasers as a "dot" stamps, and they created beautiful journal covers on cardstock, which we then assembled into little handmade books...

super snazzy cranberry chutney

This is the the fancy cranberry sauce we made (ok, mostly Eli made it, but I helped) for thanksgiving. It was an unusual recipe and it turned pretty yummy - although a bit too vinegary, we thought. Eli thinks next time we should substitute water for some of the vinegar. Here it is in progress, right before we added the pears.

Cranberry, Pear and Ginger Chutney (From Bon Apetit)

4 cups apple cider vinegar
2 cups finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh peeled ginger (from about a 4 oz piece)
5 teaspoons finely grated lemon peel
5 teaspoons finely grated orange peel
2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
1 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 12 oz bags of fresh cranberries
2 1/2 cups (packed) brown sugar
4 large firm Bosc pears, peeled, cored, cut into 3/4-inch cubes (about 5 cups)

Combine apple cider vinegar, onion, ginger, lemon peel, orange peel, cinnamon stick, crushed red pepper, and ground cloves in heavy saucepan. Boil mixture until reduced to 3 cups, about 10 minutes. Add cranberries, brown sugar, and pears; stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer until pears are very tender, berries collapse, and flavors blend, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. Remove from heat; discard cinnamon sticks. Using potato masher, mash mixture coarsely. Transfer to bowl and cool.

i use mandalas in art therapy a lot, but recently i did a giant one with some of my afterschool kids. each kid in the group did their own section, and i did the middle (because all the kids wanted to do it and that was "the only way to keep it fair". they worked so hard on it! we hung it in the main hall of the school.

The "Rainbow Fence Project" - Community Beautification with Young Artists

This "rainbow fence project" is the culmination of an ongoing community art project I led in afterschool this semester. The city park behind the school is... unpretty. So, we did a lot of brainstorming about ways to make it lovelier (some more of those ideas will hopefully come to life as well!). Once we settled on this idea, the first step was to get fabric donated, then to sort through the bags of donated fabric and cut it all into strips. Once all the fabric was cut, we sorted the strips into bags by color. after that, we did some planning sketches and scouted the park to chose the panel of chain link fence we would beautify. Then we finally began installation! Here are some photos of getting started...

We got beautiful 75 degree weather on installation day!

We worked all afternoon...

And the finished piece is totally rad.

The kids want to do more projects like this, and came up with a name for their new community art group - they are calling themselves "PEACE" - an acronym for Project for the Enrichment of Arts in the Community Environment. Check out the vocabulary on these kids! The kids took most of the photos, too. I'm so proud.

disaster updates

plumbing update: our toilets flush! i don't have to pee in the backyard! but, our tub is still backed up and won't not drain. the 4th (yes, fourth) plumber is on his way here now, so hopefully by tomorrow i can take a shower like a normal person.
furnace update: i've lost track of how many repair people we've dealt with on this one, but some dude is coming in the morning to take more of our money and hopefully remove the condemned unit so we can order a new one and give them more money and then they can install it and take even more money. fingers crossed.
this is part of our cracked heat exchanger, which is what causes carbon monoxide to leak into the house.

window update: there's still a giant hole in the living room window but compared to everything else, it kind of seems like no biggie. we'll deal with that once we have heat and/or plumbing.

homeownership shitstorm

first, two weeks ago, our furnace died. not "died" like we need to fix it or we need a new part or something - "died" like it was condemned by the city. our gas line was turned off. we need an entire new unit, plus installation, permits, duct work, co2 detectors, the works. after two weeks of poorly heating our house with space heaters, countless hours on hold, visits from two repair companies, and mounds of paperwork, we got a quote friday for the total cost. it is a lot. a whole hell of a lot. there were tears.
then, last week when we were huddled around a space heater, we heard a shattering crash. someone had thrown a rock through our living room window. really. i was so scared. we called the police. they came. no one saw anything. they filed a report, and they left. more tears.
then, today, our sewer backed up. it's too gross and upsetting to even go into. but lets just say the toilets and tub suddenly started overflowing with sewage and flooded our house. so. many. tears. the people from the city came and said the problem is not in the street, it is on our property. so eli called a plumber, who came tonight. he thinks the blockage is being caused by a tree root that has grown into a major pipe. this would mean excavation, removal of the giant oak in our yard, new piping, and who knows what else. he is still outside trying to figure out an estimate. and in the meantime, we have the hugest, grossest mess to clean up, a crazy week ahead of us, and on top of it all, we both have nasty colds.
i'm going to lay down for a minute before i clean up poop water.

we drove up to maryland this weekend to visit my grandparents, and the drive was SO gorgeous. it was sunny and the leaves were all sorts of beautiful colors. i'm telling you... it was... wow.

i grew up with snow in november, so colorful trees and 67 degrees is a welcome change.

a googley eye-dea

the students i work with in the after school program love googley eyes. like, they are obsessed with them. it started with a group of 5th grade girls making these little creatures...

but it soon evolved into boys and girls of all ages rushing to the art cabinet to pillage for eyes, then grabbing at glue guns and attaching eyes to various random objects from the "junk" shelf. in addition to the puff-ball creatures that started it all, the students have made plastic bottles with eyes, toilet paper rolls with eyes, glass jars with eyes, and on and on.

seriously, we can't buy enough googley eyes.
i've been thinking about how exciting it seems to be for the kids to anthropomorphise regular objects by adding these eyes - even trash is suddenly precious when it can look back at you. what is it about adding eyes that is so powerful to these kids? is it particular to this group of kids? or is there something in all of us that wants to humanize our surroundings?

anyway, it got my brain going about a silly project idea that they might like. i'm thinking we can use some recycled materials to make giant googley-type eye balls and use them to add some whimsy to the park behind the school - we can put them in trees, on telephone polls, etc. like this:

it will be so funny to bring things to life! and maybe it can lead to other community beautification projects (i've already had talks with some kids about how they think the park is too bare and uninviting) - i have a lot of ideas...

big news - we got our save the dates out in the mail!

i got to be crafty and had a lot of fun making each one.

i hand carved a series of stamps and then printed them on craft paper postcards. each one is a little different than the next... here is an in-process shot:

i got a nerdy new art-supply-carrying device for my job going from school to school doing art therapy. it looks like a canvas bag but it is actually hard and maintains it's sturdy shape...

so i can carry files and paper without them getting smushed.

then i found some pouches to organize other supplies. this purple one is full of markers...

and here is the scissors, glue, and tape...

and a pouch for the colored pencils, too!

other supplies can go in the handy side pockets.

so fun! i'm thinking i'll have to decorate it somehow, maybe with fabric applique or something?

hello, blogworld! it's been a while. when hurricane irene blew through, we lost our internet, which, it turns out, we are embarrassingly dependent on. we finally got it back this week, thanks to eli's patience with the ridiculous internet company people. the only other damage was to a storm window - it blew off and landed on the brick patio early in the morning, waking us up with quite a dramatic crash.

the other night i dreamt i discovered a secret stairway in our house that led to a beautiful attic master suite (our actual attic is completely unfinished). it's actually a dream i used to have often as a kid - i would notice a doorway i'd never seen, and it would lead to a secret room or floor. it the kid version, the space i found was always beautiful and clean, with tons of room to build forts and store toys and play with puppies... so now i have an adult version of the dream: exposed ceiling beams and giant skylight windows and a spa-like rain shower. plus a puppy. and maybe a fort?

eli and i made a giant felt banner for the booth at the eno river festival.

we got giant pieces of felt from the fabric store, cut out the hand/leaf shapes, and fabric-glued them together. we then hand stitched over the whole thing and sewed it on to the yellow background, leaving space for a piece of wood to slide in and hang it up.
