House dream

the other night i dreamt i discovered a secret stairway in our house that led to a beautiful attic master suite (our actual attic is completely unfinished). it's actually a dream i used to have often as a kid - i would notice a doorway i'd never seen, and it would lead to a secret room or floor. in the kid version, the space i found was always beautiful and clean, with tons of room to build forts and store toys and play with puppies... so now i have an adult version of the dream: exposed ceiling beams and giant skylight windows and a spa-like rain shower. plus a puppy. and maybe a fort?

Annie and Frankie

Annie was the baby in the neighborhood when we were growing up, so it feels like crazy times that now she is married! They had the actual wedding in frankie's backyard in chile, but tonight they had a stateside gathering to celebrate. It was emotional... I sound so old, but seriously, I remember when she was BORN. I did some crying.
I went early to help set up/make little appetizer skewers.
here they are cutting the yummy cake judy made and assembled.
yay amor!

the built-ins are built (in!)

The great built-in project of 2011 has officially been completed!
Here are a few in-progress shots:
And here's a 'before' photo, for reference.  we wanted storage there but the big bookshelf was just not working out:

And After:
We love them and are so proud of our hard work (mostly thanks to Eli and Frank's construction skills, with my contribution being of the priming/painting/sanding/filling variety). The framed fabric collage on the larger bookcase was a gift from Claire.  We love it.

Banner project

Eli and I made a giant felt banner for the booth at the Eno River Festival.
We got giant pieces of felt from the fabric store, cut out the hand/leaf shapes, and fabric-glued them together. We then hand stitched over the whole thing and sewed it on to the yellow background, leaving space for a piece of wood to slide in and hang it up.
Look! Eli is sewing! Adorable.

Thought for Today: Everything is Collage

Everything is biographical, Lucian Freud says. What we make, why it is made, how we draw a dog, who it is we are drawn to, why we cannot forget. Everything is collage, even genetics. There is the hidden presence of others in us, even those we have known briefly. We contain them for the rest of our lives, at every border we cross.

A visit with Wilson...

...the wise and gentle giant.

Flowery goodness

I've been collecting lots of flower ideas for July...

I love the pink/orange/red/white combo. I'm having our florist do similar colors in vintage ball jars I got in ebay. We talked about doing the flowers ourselves, but in the end, with all our traveling and other last-minute obligations, we decided not to make ourselves put together bouquets and centerpieces when there will be so much other stuff going on. It feels like the right choice.
