before and after

i was so impressed with this kitchen "renovation" i saw on apartment therapy. they managed to totally change the kitchen without replacing the existing cabinets - rather, they primed and painted them a clean crisp white. the only new element was the counter top, the rest is just paint and elbow grease.

embrace life

it's sort of embarrassing that a public service announcement could make me tear up, but this is so beautifully shot and so emotionally powerful that it kind of took my breath away.

i'm frightened by those who don't see it

i love the avett brothers, i love this song, and i love that the video for it is an animated oil painting. that's love x 3, if you're keeping track.
here is a clip that describes the making of the video.

this picture has just inspired me to get my dulcimer out of storage and hang it on the wall. i am so excited about the idea, i am going to use an exclamation mark!

botany and animal puzzles

so pretty. and educational!

things i suspected but now know for sure

1. when you buy "mild" salsa from the mexican grocery store on the corner, it is so.not.mild.
2. compound interest is serious business.
3. 42 degrees is too cold to enjoy a jamba juice.

daylight savings blues

i put these over my desk to cheer myself up.

weekend deliciousness

i made blueberry pancakes, and i think you should, too.

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or slightly less table salt
3 tablespoons sugar
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
3 cups buttermilk
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus 1 tablespoon extra for brushing pan

...and 1 cup of blueberries

1. Place a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Add the eggs, buttermilk, and 4 tablespoons melted butter, and whisk to combine. The batter should have small to medium lumps.

2. Test the pan by sprinkling a few drops of water on it. If the water bounces and spatters, the pan is hot enough. Using a pastry brush, brush the remaining 1/2 teaspoon butter onto the pan.

3. Pour 1/4 cup of batter onto pan. Arrange a handful of blueberries over the cooking pancake, pressing them in slightly. When the pancakes have bubbles on top and are slightly dry around the edges, about 2 1/2 minutes, flip over. Cook until golden on bottom, about 1 minute.
