park afternoon

after an attempted wedding-suit-shopping-trip turned into a lost-swatch-debacle, tomas and tanya and i went to millennium park and watched as kids did cartweels and couples made-out. then we had milkshakes.

knit one?

these lights with their little knitted cozies have popped up in my blogosphere a few times, and each time i pause and think "those are rad. i kinda want one. wait, they cost $375? nevermind". but this time i thought "wait, could i make that?", and i think the answer might possibly be maybe (that's as optimistic as i'm willing to feel about my knitting talents). i've made little tubes to knot at the top of hats... could that be similar to making these, only times forever? or, maybe a little old-school-waldorf-finger-knitting could come in handy?

paul-mail

as convenient as it is to have everything speedy and digital, there is no email or tweet or facebook post that comes anywhere close to a real, hand-written letter. i got one today from far away, from my friend paul, who has been living in peru for the last several months. this is just the latest of his traveling adventures - he is quite the rolling stone, that paul. knowing, as he does, about my love of letters and my fondness for nature presents and other letter-sized goodies, paul-mail is always some of the awesomest.

this is the eucalyptus leaf, still fragrant, that was pressed between the pages.

train artist

coming home from work today, there was an old man on the train with a large pad of newsprint and some sticks of charcoal. he was drawing people's portraits, then tearing them from his pad and giving them to the people he drew, all without saying a word. there is something really powerful about being drawn, and somehow that power was amplified by the fact that this man was a stranger - that this would likely be our one and only interaction. it felt like an honor and a revelation and a gift.

puppy news is the best kind of news

here is a teaser photo of my soon-to-be puppy sibling (!), a 5 week old, yet-to-be-named little bichon frise. according to my dad, she gets to come home in three weeks, so stay tuned for the forthcoming cuteness explosion.

lullaby painting

here's something i've been working on for the cover of a friend's album:

the EP is a series of Estonian lullabies that their band has been re-interpreting.... it should be really interesting.

breakfast revelation

while i really enjoy cooking, i also have a finite amount of patience for it - if it can't be cooked in 45 minutes or less, i'm pretty much over it. this leads to lots of pastas, curries, wraps, quiches, and stir fries in my life/belly. in the same speedy time frame, i totally impressed myself today by creating a super-delicious and surprisingly easy breakfast-style burrito. it involved scrambled eggs, black beans, veggie sausage, sour cream, avocados, salsa, and cheddar cheese. and whoa, it was good.

homey weekend

i'm back from a successful trip home, having enjoyed michael's frozen custard, the newish prairie dog enclosure at the zoo, and a nice little seder. there were also plentiful friend fun-times and even some real-estate porn, thanks to heath, who is buying a house this summer like a crazypants grown-up.

weird day

my LoudSex neighbor moved out of his apartment yesterday. he has been having LoudSex next door to me for two and a half years, so it's kind of like... the end of an era. also, it was a record setting 80 degrees outside, a stranger on the street asked me what part of korea i was from, and i dropped my toothbrush in the toilet.

i'm not sure what to make of all that, so, here's some sweet ice-cream-shop-photoboothing from austin:
