visual re-cap

i realized on the plane home yesterday that i only took one photo on my whole trip to nebraska. this is very unlike me. i tried to make up for by doodling an illustrated cartoon guide to the weekend, which will just have to suffice.

also, the one photo i did take? it was this:

i have no explanation for this purple-statue-creature, except that i came across it early one morning trying to make my way from beth's house to jeni's house (note: gorilla-friend is not actually on the way from beth's house to jeni's house. i got very very lost - inexplicably, considering they live 4 blocks apart.).

most importantly, and despite a little last-minute panic, jeni's opera went beautifully (do you like how i call it "jeni's" opera, as though the entire thing belongs to her? me too). there was a standing ovation and some happy tears, and then a midnight trip to applebees, which must be one of the finest dining esablishments in all of lincoln, nebraska, seeing as i am taken there every time i visit.

i went to another wedding tasting with monica, this time for cupcakes, which were just about the cutest ever. my favorite was the peanut butter crunch, but their red velvet was also very tasty, and the man-boy who worked there was totally adorable, in addition to being hilariously full of cupcake knowledge.

now i'm off to visit jeni for a few days and am trying to figure out how to con a friend into driving me to the airport later. i'm hoping a brunch bribe might do the trick.

things fall in place

this morning i taught a lesson on color theory to a group of design students, many of whom are interested in pursuing careers in fashion. I was struggling with ways to make such a basic topic seem relevant to the interests and goals of my class. when i got home i opened my new real simple magazine to find a giant fashion spread devoted entirely to the theme of color harmonies. the little sidebars even talk about the color wheel and all the specific things from my lesson. so now when i bring it to the next class i will appear (deceptively) prepared with real world examples, and also totally hip to the fashion world. i love when things just come together like that.

stem print

i've had a crush on this orla kieley bag for years, but, you know, her stuff is totally expensive and basically unjustifiable until i win the lottery (also, i don't think they even make this bag anymore). but just now when i was googling it i saw these mugs in the same pattern. they are still expensive for mugs, but might possibly satisfy my "multi stem print" fetish...

thought for today: an ocean inside

suggestion: make this full-screen on your monitor and just sit for a minute.

(the button in the bottom right with the four arrows takes you to full-screen mode)

hometown love for locksley

so back in madison, my home sweet home, i went to high school with these boys who were in a band. the band was called a few different things at different points in time (i have a cd from when they were "the philosopher kings", i think) but by the time we graduated it was called locksley, and they had decided to move to new york and do the music thing.

anyways, they have been on tv, played lots of awesome venues, posed in magazines with models, gone on tour all over the world (i think japan wins for loving them the most), and started wearing tighter and tighter pants. they're releasing their new cd on the 23rd, and you should probably get it. also, i think you'll agree that the way this video was shot/edited (in one continuous take) is super-funky-cool.

you can head to their myspace music page for more about them.

also, here is sam (a.k.a. the drummer) with adam and myself out to brunch one lovely madison sunday. this picture of sam also nicely illustrates how most people feel about my habit of taking pictures of people while they are trying to eat.

hello world

sometimes when the world seems sort of hard, it's a good idea to look at some pictures of baby animals.

we love fake love

in honor of post-valentines day (and to combat a very stressful monday), andrea and kat are coming over to watch the bachelor and all it's glorious made-for-tv drama and chaos and scandal (er, i mean "love").

it was my dad's birthday last week so he and deb came down to chicago for the weekend. here is the birthday boy modeling his birthday scarf i made:

my sister and i got to see a copy of his most recent book and hear stories about the search for the perfect condo (i could talk to deb about real estate listings and/or HGTV all day), and also their new pet fish - my dad possesses absurd/nerdtastic knowledge of fish and their breeding practices (clarified with hand gestures, oh yes they were). it's difficult to explain what it's like when he talks about fish, but it's sort of like maybe he's actually a secret marine biologist by night. a new item on my if-i-had-a-million-dollars list: send dad on a trip the the great barrier reef.

for pretend

i started out being "helpful" and exploring bridesmaids dresses to assist monica in her planning. but then i started finding pretty dresses that did not fit the mission (purple, long, under $250) at all, but which i just wanted to pretend i might buy and accessorize and wear. so, here are three i am pretend-buying, in order of in-love-ness:

a riddle

if i have powerpoint on my computer, and they have powerpoint on the work computers, why can't anything i send from one to the other be opened? why do things like this push the boundaries of my frustration threshold like nothing else?

why is powerpoint trying to ruin my life?

and now, a nap

i didn't realize until i saw it, but what had been missing in my life was a beautiful british baby in a rainbow sweater being coached by a shakespearean actor to recite hamlet's soliloquy. (sometimes the answer to happiness is so obvious).

white out

i took this snowy photo when i woke up, and hours later there is no sign of it letting up. i think we're really in for it this time.
unrelated: i just read and enjoyed this article about ways to structure the elementary education curriculum to focus on "raising children, rather than test scores".

sisterbird's birthday!

to celebrate, we went to brunch at bittersweet, a little bakery and cafe we really like.

i took annoying photo-while-eating pictures:

we looked at yummy/fancy/pretty desserts:

i brought her a trashy-celebrity-gossip magazine (and a real present too, don't worry):

and we ate flourless chocolate mousse cake:

songs that make me cry: track 2

If you dream of me
Like I dream of you
In a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart

Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
Please say you'll be waiting

Together again
It would feel so good to be
In your arms
Where all my journeys end
If you can make a promise
If it's one that you can keep
I vow to come for you
If you wait for me

And say you'll hold
A place for me
In your heart.

thought for today: bloggerversary

last year on this day i made my first little post on this blog. at the time, i wasn't sure if i would keep up almost-daily blogging, but here i am, one year later and still having lots of fun with it. i love that i now have of this documented year of my life; things that inspired me, things i have learned, things that fascinate or perplex me, things that are simple, beautiful, everyday occurrences. i like that i have created a little record of these things. and i love the comments i get here, the surprise interactions with like-minded individuals, and the overall kindness of strangers. thank you for reading. really.
