herb & dorothy

i had sushi with my friend tanya the other night, and she was telling me about her recent trip to boston and all the art she saw while she was there. one of the places she visited was the isabella stewart gardner museum, which is the former mansion of a wealthy art collector, who owned many famous works, as well as commissioned portraits by artists like sargent. it sounded like a really interesting place, but i was left feeling a bit jealous and thinking it's sort of unfair that only these very few, super-wealthy art patrons get to have homes full of well-known original art.

then tonight i came across this trailer for a documentary about a regular couple, herb and dorothy vogel, who have, over their lifetimes, collected over 2,000 important works of contemporary art in their tiny one-bedroom apartment. they managed to build that amazing collection of art by devotong herb's salary (he was a postal worker) entirely to the purchasing of art, while living solely on dorothy's income (she was a librarian). i fell immediately in love with them.

Oh They are just the most wonderful couple! What a great reminder that you don't need to be rich to have art ....
