tour of anna's studio

i like living in the city, but since space is at a premium, it isn't often possible to have a giant studio space all to yourself (my kitchen table and a stack of storage tubs is the closest thing i have to a studio space currently). but now that my friend anna moved to a house in iowa, she has lots more space, including this lovely studio/heaven. look, enjoy, and be jealous:

winter hats

i've been keeping myself busy lately with some knit and crochet projects for winter. i'm using yummy yarns made from alpaca and lambswool, which are quite luxurious to work with...

beloved homes

last week i went to ikea with andrea, and got this super-fun book there, which was on sale for $2.49. it was probably the best use of $2.49 ever. it's a look into 9 different swedish homes, all of which are furnished heavily with ikea items, but also with personal artwork, collections, books, and other individual touches. i'm loving it.

also, i am having a better day today. tanya is coming over to knit, and then we are going to the petting zoo to take pictures of sheep for one of her paintings.

wake up

you know sometimes when something really crappy happens, and you're like "wait. that didn't really just happen, did it? it must have been a bad dream. i am going to wake up in a minute and be so relieved!"? but you know, then you don't wake up. and whatever crappy thing that happened actually did happen? well, that's sort of what my last couple days have been like.

happiness is...felted acorns

i love acorns. once, a little girl told me i reminded her of an acorn. i thought that was the sweetest thing ever, and while i sometimes wonder what exactly about myself is reminiscent of an acorn, i mostly just bask in the glory of being compared to such a lovely object.

check out the etsy shop trudeluxe to see these adorable fall acorn babies. they are needle felted and wear real acorn caps (plus, check out the artist's profile for her inspiring story).

remember that awesome warm day yesterday? well, it's over. soo over. overnight the temperature dropped 26 DEGREES! plus, it's raining -- a cold, spit-like, constant drizzle. so much for my vitamin D regimen. fortunately, i've started a new crochet hat for winter, which it looks like i will have to start wearing immediately.

most amazing day

after weeks of unseasonably cold and dreary weather, it is suddenly a spring-like 70 degrees and wonderously sunny. it's putting me in a happy mood (vitamin D is awesome)...

i thank You God for most this amazing day:
for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;
and for everything
which is natural
which is infinite
which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday;
this is the birth day
of life and of love
of wings:
and a gay great happening illimitably earth)

how should
tasting touching
hearing seeing
--lifted from the no of all nothing-
human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake
and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

busy week, little poem

i've been having a busy week. between hosting an out-of-town friend, following up on job leads, helping a friend with her move, and keeping up with general life-maintenance, i feel like the days are going by really quickly. i mean, it's october 19th already. really? how did that happen?

here is a little poem, which is totally unrelated to the rest of this post.

Kaj Franck

When I was in iowa last week, I spent a day at the thrift stores/antique malls looking at fun vintage things. I made a few purchases, too, including this pretty enamelware bowl by finnish designer kaj franck.

Isn't the mushroom pattern adorable? In doing a little research about the designer, I found a photo of another one of his bowls, and fell way way in love with it. Look at the yellow! And the cutie cute design!

And guess what else? He was also the designer of this heart bowl, which is wild because my mom definitely had some just like this when I was a kid. Mom, what ever happened to those???

the 'someday' bookshelves

i have long admired these great bookcases from the sundance catalog. they have been in the catalog for years, and i always see them and think, "someday, when i have a grown up non-studio-sized apartment, this is the kind of thing i want to put in it". and then i sigh to myself and think maybe i should start buying lottery tickets.
