weavers' nests

some of my art therapy friends just got home from an amazing trip to africa. they took tons of stunning images of the villages they visited, the animals they saw, and the landscape that is so unlike our own. i was especially drawn to these photos of weavers' nests clustered together in the treetops - it's like they want to be close to each other, to be neighbors. the nests are each so beautiful and so perfect. oh, nature...

art inspiration: the knitted body

i am loving the fiber and wire works of karen searle...

a message

i love this idea of using an old window as a message board:

if only i had a spare window...

i'd really like to say thank you all for your kinds words and commiseration yesterday. unfortunately, the paperwork fiasco is far from cleared up, and i'm worried that it might cost me this amazing job opportunity. i have spent so much energy trying to fix it and am physically and emotionally exhausted - your good vibes have been much appreciated today...

bad day

i've had a bad couple of days.

on saturday i was pick pocketed. they didn't get anything irreplaceable, but it is a huge inconvenience and also makes me feel violated and confused.

on sunday i saw not one but TWO cockroaches in my kitchen. which is kind of my worst nightmare.

then today i went to the HR department to get my paperwork reviewed for my new job, and was told (by a very unkind, harsh, and overall nasty woman) that i don't have the right paperwork and there is a problem with my license. she sent me to someone (equally rude) at another building across town, who then sent me to a different office after that, all of which culminated in the loss of 7.5 hours of my life, and the realization that i was exactly where i started - without answers and still not officially employed.

thank goodness the bachelorette season finale was on tonight, because i really needed some fluffy reality tv to distract me (and because generally speaking, i am a not-so-secret rabid consumer of low-brow American pop culture. the lower the better).

art inspiration: circle of chalkboards

here is another stop motion animation piece (i can't get enough), this time using a series of chalkboards as a circular canvas. of course, it reminds me of william kentrige and BLU, and also of this music video.

pale yellow

my mom gave me a vintage floral tablecloth that fits my little table perfectly. i love it.

you take the things you like

after my friend robyn went to bonneroo a few summers ago, she came back talking all about how i reminded her of regina speckor - both in looks (minus the curly hair) and mannerisms. specifically, regina was really concerned about how hot it was outside that day, and was encouraging the audience to reapply their sunscreen and stay well hydrated throughout her set (this struck robyn as a very "me" thing to do, i guess).

i had forgotten about that, but this weekend at brunch a stranger approached me to say that he and his friends thought i looked just like her, i could totally be her sister, and other such things. i think he was maybe just trying to hit on me, but nevertheless, i'll take it.

(another comparison i liked is here)

below is one of my favorite regina spektor songs:

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

today in pictures

i went to the beach with tanya (and she made sandballs)

then we went to dollop.

after that i admired my new (to me) catherine holm bowl

and then watched silly tv with my sister. it was a good day.

one link, and two things i learned

ok, so my friend joseph is moving to iowa in a few weeks because he got an awesome new job that he couldn't refuse, even though i really wish he had. as part of the getting-ready-to-move-process, he is having an art sale (did i mention he's an artist? he is.). he is trying to lighten the load by selling off some of his fab creations for cheap, and he is doing it online, because he is totally tech-savvy like that. here is the link: www.josephlappie.weebly.com

also, two things i already suspected, but have recently officially confirmed:

1. i do not have tuberculosis
2. bruno is a pretty terrible movie

wishin' i had a bitchin' kitchen

i'm fond of my little apartment, but the area that is less than ideal is the kitchen. i have a nice little eat-in dining area by a big window, which is great, but the kitchen itself is blah. the floor is yucky old linoleum tile that always looks dirty, and the counter tops are definitely from the 70's. consequently, i sometimes fantasize about pretty kitchens like these, with lots of space and light, and floors and countertops that look clean and welcoming:

haircut!

forgive the sucky iphotobooth pictures, but here is my new hair. it's angled so it's longer in front. it's been a while since my last haircut, so this was fun for me...she actually cut 9" off the back - it was awesome.

note to self: maybe smile next time so you don't look like such an angsty grumpus?

baby animal cuteness

this slippery little baby sea lion needed some swimming help from it's mama (we all need help from mama, sometimes). i love it and want to pet it and play with it and swim with it forever. MWAH!

art inspiration: christina löhr's seed sculptures

how is it possible that i have never been exposed to the ethereal, delicate, organic sculptures of christina löhr? the above piece is made of dried plant stalks, and the pieces below are made of dried dandelions, thistle seeds, and ivy seedlings, respectively. they are so simple. and they couldn't be any lovelier if they tried.

un-check.

i've been running around town the last few days trying to get a good start jumping through hoops for the HR department. so far:

1. fill out 36 page HR packet...CHECK.
2. complete student loan exit interview...CHECK.
3. apply for college and grad school transcripts...CHECK.
4. schedule a physical and TB test...CHECK.
5. sign waivers to be fingerprinted, background checked, and drug tested...CHECK.
6. prepare for responsibilities of new job in any tangible way...UN-CHECK.

picking paint

one of my favorite things to do is help people pick out paint colors. gina is moving in a couple weeks and we're going to have a painting party to get the space all ready. today we went to home depot to check out the options. she seems most interested in greenish yellow shades like this and this, which should look nice with her mostly-brown furnishings (and lots and lots of books).

literary tattoos

i just spent a really long time perusing this website, which features tattoos inspired by poetry and literature...

i don't have any tattoos, but if i were to get one i kind of like the idea of incorporating text from some meaningful source. off the top of my head i can think of a few lines of walt whitman and e.e. cummings that would be really nice... what would you get?
